Hyndburn Used Furniture Store
Hyndburn Used Furniture Store recycles donated furniture and sells refurbished items and white goods to excluded and low income families across Lancashire. With the Award they will be able to buy a charcoal retort, a state-of-the-art steel burner that produces high quality charcoal from waste wood. This will help Hyndburn to reduce their costs and increase their revenue as the wood usually going to landfill will now be converted into charcoal.www.hufs.co.uk
Project of The Year 2011
Friends of Greenfield Local Nature Reserve, Colne
Our aim is to help in the maintenance of the Nature Reserve, keep it tidy with regular litter picks, educate the public, particularly young people, about the importance of our Environments and the diverse organisms that live alongside us. We want them to care for it as passionately as we do, and to understand the need to conserve so that we can maintain as much biodiversity as possible.
The grant we received from Lancashire Community Foundation enabled us to build a Hut/Hide and to extend the wooden walk-way round our pond. It has encouraged us to contact local organisations such as the Beaver scouts and the local Junior school with a view to them using the Reserve as a place in which to learn about wildlife. So far we have organised a Pond Dipping and Nature walk session for the Scouts and have visited the school to talk to a group of children about our tree dressing ceremony. We are also looking in to obtaining funding to help some unemployed people learn environmental skills and gain an NVQ level2.
